Kakira Sugar Works is the largest manufacturer of sugar in Uganda, producing an estimated 165,000 metric tons of sugar annually, accounting for about 47% of the national output. It supplies Ugandan consumers with top quality, affordable branded sugar in partnership with out-grower farmers.
The company provided Environmental and social consultancy services to the developer i.e.: Environmental and Social Action Plan for Kakira Sugar Limited Sugar Mill and Power Co-generation plant bench marked on IFC Performance Standards.
Main project features included: In setting out to expand the power co-generation plant for which an ESIA was undertaken and subsequently approved by NEMA in November 2012. In July 2013, the GET FiT Investment Committee (IC) approved financing for the KSL bagasse co-generation expansion during the IC meeting. GET FiT has approved tariff support for Kakira to supply additional 20 MW to the national grid. The Project was approved with Conditions Precedent (CPs) regarding completion of an Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP).
